Some of the most beautiful work of this craftsman, and many others, are in this book “Liège Gunmakers through their Work. 1800 - 1950”.

DEFOURNY-SEVRIN Guillaume

Here is a juxtaposed shotgun made by the Liège firm G. Defourny-Sevrin for the Polish armoury J. Sosnowski in Warsaw. English stock, top lever opening key.

The markings

Lion on PV: smokeless powder test, in use between 1898 and 1968;

J and v under star: countermarks of controllers, in use between 1877 and 1968;

EL: provisional proof, in use since 1852;

12 C in diamond: calibre, in use between 1898 and 1924;

ELG on star in crowned oval: accepted between 1893 and 1968;

D= 65 by 20. 6: length of the chamber in mm and diameter in mm after the optional smokeless powder test;

1K286. 4: barrel weight capable of firing smokeless powders, in use between 1892 and 1924;

Peron: inspection, in use since 1853;

17. 5 out of 18. 5: Uncommon, in that:

1° we usually find the word CHOKE in front of the numbers.

2° Normally, it is thus a matter of a narrowing of the diameter of the barrel: but, here, it is the opposite. According to one team member, it should be an inverted choke that widens the sheave of sinkers for a short range shot.

If my deduction is correct, the gun should be dated from the marks between 1898 and 1908.

The J. Sosnowski house in Warsaw was well known in the 19th century and certainly until the inter-war period and was closely related to Defourny-Sevrin, from what I have seen on Internet. If my deduction is correct, the weapon is attributable to Guillaume Defourny-Sevrin and must date according to the punches of between 1898 (setting in use of the punch of the gauge) and 1908 (year limit of presence of Guillaume Defourny-Sevrin in the proofhouse of Liege).
