Some of the most beautiful work of this craftsman, and many others, are in this book “Liège Gunmakers through their Work. 1800 - 1950”.

Donckier Marcel

It is about a shotgun to external hammers and to break opens thanks to the key of opening “Top Lever”. The unrifled bores of gauge 12 are juxtaposed. Locks are of type “ahead”. The stick in walnut is worked “with English”.

The weapon carries the lawful punches of the proofhouse of Liège, that is to say:

ELG* in a crowned oval: final acceptance post 1893.

T* and V*: countermarks of the controllers, of use of 1877 to 1968.

EL in English letters: provisional test, of use of 1852 to our days.

Peron: inspection, of use of 1853 to our days.

12C in a rhombus: gauge, of use of 1898 to 1924.

PV surmounted of a stylized lion: test with the powder without smoke, of use of 1898 to 1968.

D= 70 m/m /20.6: length of the room in mm and diameter in mm after optional test with the powder without smoke. In use of 1892 to 1924.

CHOKE 17.4/18.4: choke barrels: gauged in mm to 22 cm of the breech and the mouth. In use of 1910 to 1924.

The other marks are:

It changes then corporate name to become in 1903 Donckier Marcel S.A. (1903/1938) In 1938, it joins Bury Jules until 1947.

JSC in an oval: unknown. It is most probably about a manufacturer of barrels of rifles.

Here is a beautiful Anson & Deeley type express rifle with juxtaposed barrels of Liège manufacture, with two pairs of barrels, the second pair being of Austrian manufacture. Semi-pistol grip.

On the pair of Liège, one notes the following markings:

X and V under star: countermarks of controllers between 1877 and 1968

Lion on PV: test with the powder without smoke between 1898 and 1968

Peron: inspection since 1853

R crowned: rifled bores between 1894 and 1968

EL: provisional test since 1852

ELG on star in crowned oval: acceptance between 1893 and 1968

450 express: the gauge

11. 2: the diameter of the barrel

M. Donckier Liege: Marcel Donckier took again in 1898 the activities of Florent Ume (registered with the proofhouse of 1869 to 1898). It changed its name in 1903 to Marcel Donckier SA (BE 1903-1938). In 1938, he joined forces with Jules Bury (BE 1896/1947) until 1947.

On the Austrian pair, one notices the eagle, the annuals letters BTY (April 1987), 9. 3. 74R (the calibre) and EF and NPF (the punches of the proofhouse of Ferlach, in the south of Austria, near the border with Slovenia), as well as Josef Just Ferlach, an old house (since 1790) which produces high quality hunting weapons (juxtaposed, superimposed, drillings, vierlings, etc). Three-year waiting period.....

Böhler is a high quality Austrian steel manufacturer that has been active for a century and a half.

It is about a rifle of hunting to central percussion and juxtaposed barrels.

It’s gauge of 10,75 X 52R not very used and which probably results from a special order?

Mounting seems me to be in walnut worked “pistol”.

The weapon carries the punches of a proofhouse of Liege, namely:

ELG on star in an oval under crown: acceptance post 1893.

Peron: inspection post 1853.

X - AB - M under star: countermarks of controllers post 1877.

EL in English letters: provisional test of use of 1852 to our days.

PV surmounted of a stylized lion: test with the powder without smoke, of use of 1898 to 1968.

1 kg 717: weight of the barrels which can draw from the powders without smoke except for the gram (smooth weapons). This punch for weapon smoothes seems to me anachronistic on this striped weapon and I am unaware of why it was struck there by the proofhouse?

R under crown: rifled bores, of use of 1894 to 1968.

B.BLINDEE: rifled bores of calibre higher than .22 for lined balls, of use of 1910 to 1968.

10.4: calibre in mm, of use of 1889 to our days.

Small letter “d”: yearly letter of 1925.

Other markings:

552: should be a serial number.

DONCKIER LIEGE: marking of the manufacturer Marcel DONCKIER, arms manufacturer, Lemonnier passage, 13 in LIEGE was registered with the proofhouse of Liege of 1898 to 1903.

It had begun again in 1898, the activity of UME Florent (BE 1869/1898).
