Galand Charles François

It is about a rifle to be charged by the breech, invention of the arms manufacturer C. F. Galand in 1866.

This Belgian patent bears the n° 19881 and is dated 21.07.1866.

This invention relates to a breech loading firearm system applicable to artillery as well as to all kinds of weapons such as rifles, carbines, pistols etc.

The principle of the invention is the obturation and closing of the barrel by means of a screw entering the thunder of the weapon. The details of this system are to be read in the attached patent!

The weapon carries the following punches of Liège:

ELG* in a vertical oval: final acceptance, of use of 1846 to 1893.

N crowned: countermark of the controller, in use from 30. 12. 1853 to 26. 01. 1877.

Perron: inspection, in use from 16. 06. 1853 to the present day.

The weapon also carries the mark of the manufacturer-inventor is Charles-François Galand patented inventor registered in Liege street Louvrex, 37.

This French arms manufacturer had its own factory in Liege rue Vivegnis, 296.

He was on the Liège test bench from 1869 to 1920, when he died in 1900.

It is his son René Charles who would have taken over the factory without changing its name of origin!

During his career (1866 to 1879), Charles-François filed 25 patents for inventions or improvements.
