Some of the most beautiful work of this craftsman, and many others, are in this book “Liège Gunmakers through their Work. 1800 - 1950”.

Grandjean Léon

Here is a garden rifle as thousands have been made, with small (like here) or long (type WARNANT), caliber not specified, probably in 9 mm annular, of cork manufacture marked GRANDJEAN. Octagonal cannon, English lacrosse, cheek rest. To be connected with a shooting pistol also marked GRANDJEAN.

Markings

ELG on star in oval: accepted between 1846 and 1893;

X under asterisk: countermark of a controller between 1877 and 1968;

JD: We know these initials for Jean DUCHATEAU, but he was active after the 1st GM (the rifle dates from before 1893), and this in the fine guns. We also thought of Joseph Thomas DESSART, a gunmaker in Cheratte: he filed two patents, between 1886 and 1890, but they have nothing to do with either the rifle or the pistol. So mystery...

GRANDJEAN: probably Léon GRANDJEAN, registered at the proofhouse of Liège from 1863 to 1866, followed by GRANDJEAN Léon & Cie (BE 1866-1868), followed by GRANDJEAN Léon (BE 1868- ???).

According to the markings, the rifle was manufactured between 1877 and 1893 at the latest.
