Some of the most beautiful work of this craftsman, and many others, are in this book “Liège Gunmakers through their Work. 1800 - 1950”.

LHOIST T.

This is a percussion revolver called a "transition" signed by T. LHOIST. Ebony grips (?) gridded, the barrel is attached to the axis of rotation by a pin. Below the axis of rotation there is an opening allowing the passage of a separate rod to load each chamber of the barrel.

The only stamp photographed is a U, apparently under a crown, that of a controller before 1877.

Toussaint LHOIST of Cheratte filed three patents between 1851 and 1853: AC 5652 of April 14, 1851 (MARIETTE-style pepperbox), AC 5894 of September 16, 1851 and AC 7546 of December 8, 1853 (strongly inspired by the Colt 1851), but none of them correspond to the weapon presented.

The "Musée d’Armes de Liège" has a Toussaint LHOIST six-shot revolver in a 9 mm caliber dated 1851, with reference 1808. Maybe he's the same guy.

In any case, Colt granted Toussaint LHOIST the right to manufacture weapons according to the Colt system, with loading of the capsule barrel from the front and loading lever. And LHOIST represented the Colt brand for Europe.

LHOIST T.

Here is a beautiful percussion revolver signed T. LHOIST Breveté in Cheratte (a commune of the Liège agglomeration). He and other names have already been mentioned on the site.

The term “patented” refers either to the fact that the gunsmith holds an “armour’s certificate”, or to the fact that he has applied for one or more patents, or that the weapon in question has been patented.

It is known that Toussaint LHOIST filed three patents between 1851 and 1853, but none concern the mechanism of the revolver: the rod under the barrel can slide about two centimetres in order to insert a bullet into the barrel.

Perhaps he filed more patents, including one for this revolver? In any case, and so far, we have no trace of it. Or did he use someone else’s patent without mentioning his name? Mystery.

It is known that he was active until 1873 and was in contact with Colt who authorized him to use his patents. He manufactured revolvers and shotguns/barrel rifles.

The weapon passed through the Liège proofhouse:

ELG on star in oval (accepted between 1846 and 1893), and q inverted crowned (countermark of a controller, between 1853 and 1877).

LHOIST T.

Here is a beautifully percussion revolver bearing two signatures: T. LHOIST and DAVID H Patented, the former being more than likely the manufacturer, the latter the patent applicant.

Markings

ELG on star in oval: accepted between 1846 and 1893;

V crowned: countermark of a controller between 1853 and 1877;

Concerning T. LHOIST, the one we are interested in is a certain T. (Toussaint?) and maybe also T.J. (Toussaint? Joseph ?).
