Some of the most beautiful work of this craftsman, and many others, are in this book “Liège Gunmakers through their Work. 1800 - 1950”.
For more detail see: LIEGE GUNMAKERS
Valet Jacques
This is a one-shot flintlock weapon. The barrel is eight-sided. The plate is of
the "forward" type and the counterplate with two screws. The hammer is in a
gooseneck. The butt seems to made of fruit wood.
The weapon bears no mark of proof.
The lock bears the mention
Jacques Valet à
Liège.
On the website there is a
J. Valet,
it could be Jean, Jacques or Joseph, it's impossible to say. We can't tell if
it's the same or not!
The mention "A Liège" does not help us either because it is a weapon of the 18th
century and Belgium only exists from 1830 !
The
HDL stamped on
the barrel probably belongs to the manufacturer of barrels of rifle from the
valley of the Vesdre (between Liège and Verviers) but it is not on the list of
barrel makers!?
An appeal is made to our readers for the possible identification of this 18th
century gunsmith from Liège.
