Here is a revolver of Liège origin whose line and
architecture are obviously inspired by those of the
NAGANT
revolvers. It is therefore probably in 9.4 mm calibre like the
NAGANT
model 1878 which, available in single and double action, gave rise to a series
of weapons that were adopted by various European countries.
This revolver has pads made of light wood, of
undetermined origin. Its barrel is round, unlike the original
NAGANT
1878 models, which are usually octagonal. These features, as well as the head of
the extraction rod, militate for a rather late production prefiguring the 1895
NAGANT,
although this specimen was produced before 1893 as attested by the ELG oval on a
star visible on the back of the cylinder.
A lot of detailed information about the
NAGANT
revolver line can be found on the site.
Marking on the carcass suggests the initials
HD,
which may correspond to
HENRION and DASSY.
Markings:
Oval ELG
on star: stamp of the proofhouse in effect from 8 September 1846 to 11 July
1893, back of the cylinder.
2725,
left side of carcass (serial number ?).
Marking evoking the initials
HD
on the left side of the carcass.
Letter X,
on the back of the barrel, which also has another illegible marking on the
photos.
It is therefore a revolver designed on the structure
and principle of the
NAGANT 1878
revolver, manufacturer not determined with certainty (perhaps
HENRION and
DASSY), produced between 1878 and 1893.
