NAGANT M.1891 Serbian
In 1890,
a Commission was set up in Serbia to examine various proposals for the
introduction of a standard revolver for all Serbian armed forces. It had taken
the Swedish M.1887 as the basis for its reflections.
In 1891,
the Ministry of War decided to approve this revolver, after imposing various
modifications that were to improve it. It was definitively retained as the M.
1891.
The firm
Eugène et Léon NAGANT won a contract for the supply of 12,000 revolvers, with
accessories and ammunition. Although NAGANT began manufacturing in 1892 and
delivery in 1893, the entire order was apparently not completed until 1998.
The
modifications compared to the Swedish M.1887 required by the Ministry are found
in full on the revolver presented. It has a double cylinder lock and a safety
system, elements present on this weapon, on the one hand visible notches on the
perimeter of the cylinder, and on the other hand at the loading door of the
ABADIE system which acts as a safety (see the red and yellow arrows on the
sketch below)
The
weapon presented was equipped with a longer barrel and a .22 caliber.
It is not
known if it was intended for military training or for sports practice.
Marking
of the weapon
On the
left side of the frame, on the front is the mark

(Military/State), mark of the Serbian Government, then BREVET NAGANT the mark of

The
acceptance hallmark (ELG on a star in an oval) under a crown is applied on the
rear edge of the cylinder together with a */P, mark of an inspector
