Janssen

The patronym of "JANSSEN" is rather widespread in arms manufacture inhabitant of Liège of 19th and 20th centuries without for that which it acts either of the same family or of the same company. Thus we count the following arms manufacturers:

JANSSEN Fils & Cie

 

Individually we notice JANSSEN, Albert, manufacturer of weapons (1888/1896) who was the manager of company JANSSEN Fils & Co. This last deposited two patents in 1888 and 1896 for an apparatus of closing for barrels taking care by the cylinder head and the other for improvements with tilting gun rifles.

 

We also meet JANSSEN, Joseph, manufacturer of weapons, street Lambert Le bègue, 4. The founder, who deposited two patents in Belgium in 1871 for a system of rocker of shotgun undertaking by the cylinder head and in 1889 for a system shotgun Hammerless.

 

JANSSEN, Maurice, arms manufacturer less known, domiciled street Lambert Le bègue, 4 was to also form part of the company but we do not have other information about it.

We also meet JANSSEN, Hubert, controller of weapons, LIEGE 1864 - 1865 whose possible family tie with the other JANSSEN is unknown for us.

It was announced by the deposit of four patents of 1864 to 1868 concerning applications to the systems of closing of the weapons taking care by the cylinder head.

1. Adolphe Jérome Victor JANSEN

Born on July 20, 1816, in Brussels, and died on April 11, 1878, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, at the age of 61.

He was able to bear the title of arquebusier to the King of the Belgians.

Married on December 12, 1843, in Brussels, to Anne-Marie CAMMAERTS (1826-1884). They had one daughter: Marie-Livine JANSEN (1850-1909).

He had two brothers and one sister:

Marie-Françoise JANSEN (1808-1878)

François-Joseph JANSEN (1809-1892)

Henri Constantin Joseph JANSEN (1813-1813)

He filed nine patents in Belgium, between 1843 and 1867, bearing on pistols that load without powder, improvements to revolvers and LEFAUCHEUX rifles, etc.

 

2. François-Joseph Jansen

Born on December 11, 1809 in Brussels and died on January 21, 1892 in Brussels (Saint Josse), at the age of 82.

He was both director of the Lier military hospital and arms supplier to His Majesty the King.

He was the nephew of Adolphe Jérome Victor Jansen.

Married in 1832 to Sophie Catherine de Reusme (1817-1906). They had eight children:

3. Emile Adolphe Jansen

Born on November 10, 1849, in Louvain, and died on November 13, 1932, at the age of 83.

He was a gunsmith and purveyor to the Court and president of the Belgian gunsmiths.

Married in 1877 to Marie Léopoldine Caroline Payot (1852-1906). They had 9 children:

4. Ernest Henri Jansen

Born in 1888 and died in 1958, at the age of 70.

He was a civil engineer at UCL, gunsmith to Leopold III and Baudouin I, and president of the Belgian gunsmiths.

Childless, his estate was bequeathed, with the consent of his sister Florence, to the heirs of his sister Sophie.

It should be noted that in 1856, the surname was spelled JANSSENS in an almanac.

Notes:

In 1840, we find a "Jansens A.", established at Rue de Laeken 68, Brussels, but was he the initiator of the Jansen saga?

The records of the LIEGE proof house indicate its registration on several successive dates: from 1859 to 1884, from 1885 to 1890, from 1891 to 1931 and, finally, from 1939 to 1958.
